LEADER OF THE MAJORITY PARTY IN NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

The Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah, MGH, MP was elected Leader of the Majority Party in the 13th parliament on 6th October 2022. He is the Member of Parliament for Kikuyu Constituency and a ranking Member of Parliament serving his third consecutive term.

Political Career

Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah began his political career in 2013 when he was first elected to The 11th Parliament in 2013 as MP for Kikuyu constituency on a TNA ticket. In the 2017 general elections, Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah became the 1st MP to be elected unopposed under the Constitution of Kenya 2010. He was elected third time MP on Aug 9th 2022.

 

During his 1st term as MP, he served as Vice - Chairman of the Public Investments Committee, member of the Powers and Privileges Committee and member of the Departmental Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Co-operatives in parliament.  He also represented Kenya in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).

In the 12th Parliament He served as the Chairperson, Budget and Appropriations Committee until 2019 and a member of the Committee on Appointments. He also attended the World Bank IMF spring meetings in 2017 & 2018 to discuss issues of global concern on behalf of Government of Kenya.

In his Legislative role, Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah sponsored the Alcoholic Drinks Control (Amendment) Bill, 2014, which among others required government to recognize alcoholism as a disease and take a public health approach to dealing with the menace including the establishment of government sponsored rehabilitation centers. He is also the sponsor of the National Disaster Management Authority Bill (2019) which seeks to establish the National Disaster Management Authority and promote coordinated response to disasters across the country.

As a professional accountant, he has also made significant contributions to bills emanating from departmental committees relating to his field such as the Insurance (Amendment) Bill (2013) where he sought amendments to the bill to allow free market selection of auditors by insurance firms and creation of term limits for the CEO of the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA). In the spirit of encouraging increase in parliamentarians’ participation in legislative work through private member bills, he was the first to propose to the 12th parliament to consider amendments to the House Standing Orders to allow bills that had passed the first and second readings in the house to be reintroduced without pre-publication scrutiny once they lapsed. The proposal was taken up by the House Business Committee leading to the amendment of standing orders and promoting continuity of bills from one parliament to the other.

He has been listed by Mzalendo watch as the best performing member in parliament in terms of contributions to bills and house activity and ranked in the top 5 of the MPs approval ratings conducted by research Firm Infotrak based on his legislative prowess and eloquence in parliamentary debates and the proper handling of public finances such as NG-CDF for development projects consistently.

 

Before Politics, he had an accomplished career in the private sector having held senior management positions several companies in Diverseylever East Africa, Madison Insurance Company, The Standard Group. Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah  also prides himself in being a fine butcher which is not a mean fete considering that one of the largest publicly owned abattoir, the Dagoretti Slaughterhouse in his constituency, is a source of employment for over 5000 people.
