Senator Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen, the elected Senator of Elgeyo Marakwet County, has a wealth of experience in legislation and parliamentary leadership. He is the current Senate Leader of Majority, having been appointed by his Jubilee Party last August to spearhead Government business in the House.

He was first elected Senator in 2013 after Kenya’s Constitution promulgated in 2010 created a bi-cameral Parliament. In his first term as Elgeyo Marakwet Senator, he was the Leader of Delegation to the Pan African Parliament between 2013 and 2015.

Senator Murkomen, 39, also served as the first Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Devolution and Inter-Governmental Relations Committee. His Committee was instrumental in midwifing the implementation of Devolution, the decentralization model established by the 2010 Constitution. He also served as a member of the Senate Speaker’s Panel for two years.

In December 2015, the legislator became the Senate Deputy Majority Leader, a position he held until the end of the 11th Parliament.

Senator Murkomen has speaheaded development projects in Kenya, especially in his home county. He is credited for among others providing scholarships to dozens of needy students to pursue secondary, tertiary and university education.

Prior to his election to the Senate, Mr Murkomen was a member of the Task Force on Devolved Government, which came up with six pieces of legislation that operationalized Devolution.

He has also served as a member of the Kenya Anti-Counterfeit Agency board for one year.

Senator Murkomen is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and holds Master of Laws. He has taught law in a number of Kenyan universities and institutions of higher learning, and has consulted for many public and private institutions worldwide.

He is married with four children.
