The Constitutional Implementation and Oversight Committee (CIOC), led by sessional Chairperson, Hon. Patrick Ntwiga (Igambangโ€™ombe) held a meeting with officials from the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) to review the accomplishments of the Commission in the protection of human rights.ย

The Chairperson, KNCHR, Ms. Roseline Odede, presented an overview report to the Committee, addressing various issues including LGBTQ rights, intersex persons' rights, death penalty concerns, the Embakasi fire tragedy, and corruption in the health sector among others.

ย Members expressed reservations about KNCHR's advocacy for LGBTQ rights, questioning its alignment with the rights of intersex individuals.

ย According to Ms. Odede, the KNCHR advocates for the prevention of harm based on sexual orientation, neither opposing nor favoring the LGBTQ community, but asserting that everyone deserves humane treatment regardless of their orientation.

ย "We adhere to the 'do no harm' principle, especially concerning the LGBTQ community. Every individual deserves protection, regardless of their sexual orientation. We stand firm on this principle as they are human beings," Ms. Odede said.

ย In addition, she appealed to the Committee to offer support in advancing the Intersex Bill that is expected to be brought to the National Assembly soon.

ย Members acknowledged the violation of intersex person's rights and recognized KNCHR's efforts, citing the inclusion of intersex markers in the National Census as a significant achievement.
