Hon. John Kiarie (Dagoretti South) has called for a renewed commitment in promotion of transparency, accountability and inclusivity in Parliamentary democratic governance.

Hon. Kiarie made the call during the celebration of the International Day of Parliamentarism.

Through a statement that he read on the Floor of the House, Hon. Kiarie highlighted the importance of the international day noting that it is critical for Parliamentary democracy at aΒ  time when people have lost trust in Parliamentary institutions.

He told Members that it is time to review progress that Parliaments have made in achieving some key goals; to be more representative and move with times including carrying out self-assessments, working to include more women and young Members and adapting new technologies.

β€œThe United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution A/RES/72/278, recognized the role of Parliaments in National plans and strategies and in ensuring greater transparency and accountability both at National and global levels in order to ably represent and protect the interest of the public,” part of Hon. Kiarie’s statement read.

The theme of this year's celebration wasΒ  Parliaments for Planet as an emphasis towards better climate policies.

According to Hon. Kiarie, in 2016 the House passed the Climate Change Act in order to provide a regulatory framework for enhanced mechanisms and measures to achieve low carbon climate development. In addition, the House hasΒ  taken steps to ensure that its internal processes are responsive to Sustainable Development GoalsΒ  13 on Climate Action.
