Kenyans are invited to submit memoranda on a treaty to establish the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

Β The National Assembly Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations is seeking memoranda from the public and stakeholders on the treaty, which was tabled in Parliament on June 4, 2024.

Β The purpose of the treaty is to replace the existing agreement establishing IGAD, signed in 1996, and aims to widen and deepen cooperation between member states to achieve sustainable development.

Β The Treaty aims to accelerate regional, economic, social, environmental and political integration; and cross-border cooperation among Member States. It also aims to strengthen IGAD's ties with the African Union and other regional economic communities.

Β In line with Article 118(1)(b) of the Constitution, members of the public can submit their memoranda by mail, hand delivery, or email. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at 5:00 PM.

Β The full text of the treaty and the accompanying memoranda to Parliament can be accessed on the Parliament of Kenya website
