The Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture has supported plans by the Government to set up a monument in Marsabit in honour of leaders who perished in a plane crash in 2006.

Members led by Turkana North MP, Hon. Ekwom Nabuin said plans by the National Heroes Council were a welcome move.

Noting that the victims of the crash were former colleagues, Hon. Nabuin said the Committee had decided to visit the site of the 2006 crash.

The MPs who perished in the plane crash included Hon. (Dr.) Bonaya Godana, Hon. Mirugi Kariuki, Hon. Abdi Tari Sasura, Hon.Β  Guracha Galgallo and Hon. Titus Ngoyoni.

Anglican Church Bishop William Waqo and other senior civil servants in the security sector who had accompanied the MPs also lost their lives.

Hon. Nabuin pointed out that it is good that the Council had decided to build the monument in remembrance of the leaders' commitment and dedication in search of lasting peace in Upper Eastern.

Marsabit County MP, Hon. Waqo Jillo, wife to Bishop Waqo who was leading the peace mission, said honouring her husband and other leaders meant a lot to her family, the entire county and beyond.

"Hon. Godana was committed to ensuring that there was a lasting peace in Marsabit for the growth of the region but it is unfortunate that together with other leaders on the same mission perished," she said.

She added that the monument will be a symbol of peace and called for an expedition of the project.

Busia County MP, Hon. Catherine Omanyo noted that it is good that the Government has thought of honouring peace ambassadors who tirelessly pursued the course.

"It is good that the National Heroes Council has decided to honour leaders who died in the plane crash. The Committee will fully support the project that has a lot of significance to Marsabit people and the entire country," said Hon. Omanyo.

The Committee assured residents that they will endure that adequate money was appropriated to the Ministry for completion of the project.
