Earlier today, the Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, chaired by Kirinyaga County Senator James Kamau Murango, MP, met to consider the response on a Statement sought by Senator Lenku Kanar Seki, MP on the Restocking and Revitalizing Kenya's Livestock Industry for Economic Stability and Growth by the Cabinet Secretary of Agriculture and Livestock Development, Hon. Mithika Linturi.Β 

In the Statement, the CS was to apprise the committee on the impact of the recent drought on the livestock industry, stating its effects on local and national economies; Explain interventions in place to mitigate effects of drought on the livestock sector, in both the short and long term, spelling out immediate and sustainable interventions deployed to suppport recovery of the sector from the effects of drought; State measures put in place by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development and sector players to urgently facilitate affected families to restock livestock in order to minimize the negative effects of the drought and stabilize the meat supply chain; and explore possibility ofΒ affordable access to credit by livestock owners and an emergency fund to be advanced by Government to livestock owners to aid in mitigating current and future effects of drought on the livestock sector.Β 

The Committee found the responses from the CS unsatisfactory and resolved to further invute the CS and PS Agriculture and Livestock Development, the Chairperson of Agriculture, Livestock and Cooperatives Committee, Council of Governors, and Governors from Semi Arid Counties which were severely affected by drought, to expound on the Statement.
