Today marks the conclusion of a two-day impeachment hearing for Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, as she prepares to mount her defence against a litany of accusations. The Senate will subsequently determine whether the charges levelled against her are substantiated.

Β

The Governor has assembled a legal team comprising six advocates to fight for her political survival. Spearheading her defence are lawyers Elicha Ongoya and Elias Mutuma, supported by Bridah Kimathi, Robert Mutembei, Edgar Busienga and Collins Mwenda.

Β

Yesterday's proceedings, which stretched late into the night, saw Governor Mwangaza vehemently refute all charges brought against her by the Meru County Assembly. The allegations include gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, gross misconduct and abuse of office.

Β

The County Assembly initiated its case by calling four witnesses to the stand. First to testify was Hon Zipporah Kinya, the Member of Meru County Assembly who originally moved the motion for the Governor's removal.Β

Β

In a stark warning, Hon Kinya declared, "We will impeach the governor as many times until the Governor embraces good, transparent, accountable governance that is responsive to the needs of the people of Meru."

Β

Subsequent witnesses included Irene Kawira, widow of deceased Meru blogger Daniel Muthiani (alias Sniper), Linda Kiome, a former legal advisor to Governor Mwangaza and Jacob Kirari, the Meru County Assembly Clerk.Β

Β

Both the County Assembly and the Governor presented opening statements, setting the stage for the submission of evidence. The hearing also provided a platform for thorough examination and counter-examination of witnesses, with Senators granted opportunities to probe for further details.

Β

As the impeachment trial enters its final day, all eyes are on Governor Mwangaza as she prepares to present her defence. The Senate will thereafter carefully consider the evidence presented by both parties before rendering its verdict on the governor’s impeachment.
