The National Assembly has appointed a team of seven Members of Parliament to a Mediation Committee. The time is tasked with considering the Employment (Amendment) Bill, 2022, Senate Bill which was rejected by the House.

ย The Employment (Amendment) Bill sought to provide for the right to disconnect in the digital age for Kenyan workers, allowing them to disregard work communications outside of their designated working hours.

ย Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Moses Wetangโ€™ula while guiding the House said, "The National Assemblyโ€™s rejection of the said Bill essentially remitted the Bill to a Mediation Committee in line with Standing Order 149(1) (b),"ย 

Following Houseโ€™s rejection of the Bill at its Second Reading, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Moses Wetang'ula in consultation with the Leader of the Majority Party and the Leader of the Minority Party appointed the following Members to the Mediation Committee;

1.ย ย ย ย ย  Hon. Eric Muchangi, MP (Co-Chairperson);

2.ย ย ย ย ย  Hon. Gitonga Murugara, MP;

3.ย ย ย ย ย  Hon. Mary Emaase, MP;

4.ย ย ย ย ย  Hon. Lilian Siyoi, MP;

5.ย ย ย ย ย  Hon. (Dr.) Wilberforce Oundo, MP;

6.ย ย ย ย ย  Hon. Irene Mayaka, MP; ย and,

7.ย ย ย ย ย  Hon. Ruth Odinga, MP

The National Assembly team will represent the House in the mediation process.ย 

Speakerย Wetangโ€™ula added that the Mediation Committee will be fully constituted upon appointment of Senators to the Committee. Thereafter, the Committee will embark on an attempt to develop a mediated version of the Bill in accordance with Article 113 of the Constitution for consideration by the Houses of Parliament."

The Mediation Committee once fully constituted will attempt to reconcile differing positions and develop a mediated version of the Bill for consideration by the National Assembly and the Senate.
