"Poverty has pushed Kilifi County residents to terrorism extremism, nuclear power plant in Kilifi will aggravate the problem. Ksh. 500 billion that is intended to putting up a nuclear power plant in Uyombo village, should be invested in making the lives of Kilifi County residents better." Said Boniface Mwangi, Land and Environment Defenders Activists representative.

Β

"We should protect the people of Kilifi and grant them the right for good health. We shall not allow the nuclear power plant to proceed without the involvement of Kilifi people and full disclosure of the processes in establishing nuclearpowerplant" Sen. MadzayoΒ

Β

He further elucidated that, "We are not prepared to handle catastrophes in this country, you can imagine what would be happen if the nuclear power plant blows up. We are not ready for nuclear plant in Kilifi."

Β

Mungatana said, "We made a decision as Senate committee to come and listen to the petitioners and other nuclear power plant stakeholders."

Β

He explained that Kenya must balance between safety, public interest and investment in our counties. He said that Ksh. 500 billion is not small money to pump into an economy but considerations but be looked into. He further said that the Senate is a fair arbiter and that it shall ensure that decision we make is an informed decision.Β

Β

Sen. Okiya Omtatah who presented the petition to the Senate on behalf of the petitioners said that article 10 of the Constitution of Kenya states that the National Values and Principles of Governance bind all state organs, state officers, public officers and all persons whenever any of them.

Β

"The Kilifi residents are saying that nuclear power plant project should not be rushed. We don't want to destroy the environment that we have to get something that we don't have. Who benefits from this massive project and who is affected with the same." Said Senator Omtatah.

Β

Senator Omtatah said that if the country stayed faithful to Article 10, then Kenyans would not be taking about destruction of their environment. The people are not against putting put the power plant but what they are against is putting up the nuclear plant in Uyombo village without consulting the residents of that village.Β

Β

Further he asked, "We have not exhausted the geothermal resources in this country which is cleaner green energy, why are we exploring the nuclear plant when other countries like Germany are shutting down their nuclear power plants in phases?"

Β

He finally said that Kenyans should confront their fears as the country. He promised that the Senate shall make a sober decision on this petition and provide a solution that is viable.
