Members of the National Assembly have raised concern that the National Government has not only caused significant delays but has also failed in its duty to compensate citizens for the lands acquired for infrastructural projects.
The legislators noted that a number of Kenyans find themselves trapped in severe destitution due to the Government's forceful acquisition of their lands without compensation.Β
Members were giving their comments on a petition by Mr.Β Ibrahim Nthitu Makwattah acting on behalf of the landowners whose lands and properties were compulsorily acquired by the Government of Kenya for the development of the Kibwezi Lorry Park and other roadside facilities along the KibweziβKitui Road.
Hon. (Dr). Makali Mulu (Kitui Central)Β said theΒ law provides for compensation whenever the Government acquires land from citizens. βThe law is very clear that when the Government acquires land for purposes of public good, it must compensate those who have given out their land,β he said.Β
Hon. Didmus Barasa (Kimilili) underscored the duty of Parliament toΒ guarantee the swift and comprehensive compensation for Kenyans whose lands have been acquired by the Government.Β
βThere are very many Kenyans who had their land acquired by the Government and it is their right to be paid their dues. Any slight delay should not be tolerated,β said Hon. Barasa.Β
