The National Assembly's Sports and Culture Committee, led by the Chairperson Hon. Daniel Wanyama (Webuye West), convened a meeting with the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) to discuss the strategic management of Kenya's historical, cultural, and national heritage.
Β According to the National Museums and Heritage Act, NMK is responsible for the preservation of Kenya's cultural and natural heritage. NMK serves as a centre for research and is a repository for matters related to science, culture, technology, and human interest. Furthermore, NMK plays a crucial role in promoting cultural resources and economic development.
During the Committee's visit, Members discussed the running of the museums and its capacity to impact on cultural social economic development. They also sought to establish the status of the Uhuru Gardens National Monument and Museums, which are currently under construction in Langata.
Hon. Caroli Omondi (Suba South) urged the NMK Board to take swift action and regain control of the Uhuru Gardens facility. He emphasized that heritage preservation should not fall under county governments' purview but that of theΒ NMK.
Hon. Wanyama assured the management of NMK that the Committee is committed to the preservation of Kenyaβs Cultural Heritage and promised to channel additional funds to NMK in the next budget.
βThis Visit gives us a lot of insight into your needs and where as the policy making body we should come in. I want to assure you that now there is light at the end of the tunnel", said Hon Wanyama.
