The National Assembly DepartmentalΒ Committee on Justice and legal Affairs chaired byΒ Hon. George Murugara (Tharaka)Β met Hon. Jane Maina (Kirinyaga) who appeared before the Committee to present her proposals on the Kenya School of Law (Amendment) Bill, 2023.
Hon. MainaΒ who is also a Member of the JLAC seeks to amend Section 16 of
the Kenya School of Law (KSL) Act, (2012), in order to confer upon the Council of Legal Education, the power to prescribe admission requirements to courses of study at the Kenya School of Law.
She is proposing deletion of the words set out in the Second Schedule "for that course" and substituting with the words "prescribed by the Council of Legal Education under Section 8(3)(a) of theLegal Education Act".
Hon. Maina said that her concern is Section 16 of the Kenya School of Law Act, whichΒ provides that one has to qualify for minimum admission requirements for the University to be admitted at the Kenya School of Law. The Council for Legal Education (CLE) has the mandate to oversee progression but because of the provision of the Act, they have been unable to do the same.Β
"I am proposing that we amend Section 16 so that we give full mandate to CLE, to ensure that they are the ones to determine the minimum entry requirementsΒ for the Advocates Training Programme,"she said.
