The Vice Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs Hon. Mwengi Mutuse (Kibwezi West) met Judges, Judicial Officers and other justice sector stakeholders during the launch of this yearβs Judiciary Performance Management and Measurement Report.
Β Hon. Mutuse informed the State Officials that Parliament through the Committee increased the budgetary allocation for the Judiciary by about Kshs5 billion from Kshs.19 billion to Kshs.24 billion for the Financial Year 2023/2024.
Β βWe intend to sustain the upward trend to meet Judiciary budgetary requirements of about Kshs.43 billion to ensure social transformation and access to justice by all Kenyansβ, Hon. Mutuse said.
Β On the Statute Law (Miscellaneous Amendment) Bill (2023) the Vice Chairperson said JLAC has recommended an amendment of the Judicature Act to increase the number of Court of Appeal Judges from the current capping of 30 judges to 45 judges.
Β Further, he assured the meeting that the Departmental Committee will support efforts to have a High Court station in each county across the country and a Magistrateβs Court in each constituency.
Hon. Mutuse congratulated the Judiciary for choosing the path of self performance assessment.
