COMMITTEE ON EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES QUESTION TOURISM FUND ON EMPLOYMENT DIVERSITY

The Committee on National Cohesion and Equal Opportunities, under the leadership of Hon. Yusuf Adan (Mandera West) met the Tourism Fund Chief Executive Officer (CEO)  Mr. David Mwangi to address concerns regarding employment diversity and procurement reservation for special interest groups.

According to documents presented by Mr. Mwangi, the current workforce at the Fund is  265 employees. The Committee expressed concerns over the dominance of two communities in the composition of employees at the Fund.

Members were concerned about the lack of representation from other ethnic groups, specifically those from communities in tourism areas, who play a vital role in preserving parks and game reserves in Kenya.  The Committee emphasized the need to address this inequality.

Regarding compliance with Article 54 (2) of the Constitution, which mandates the inclusion of persons with disabilities in appointive positions, the Committee expressed disappointment with the current representation. Documents presented before the Committee revealed that out of the 265 employees, nine individuals are persons living with disability. This accounts for 3.4 percent contrary to the set target of five percent according to the Constitution.
