The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Transport and Infrastructure held a familiarization retreat with State Departments under it's oversight preview.

The Committee Chaired by Hon. George Kariuki (Ndia) met Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure officials to deliberate on, among other issues, the mandate of key State Departments, their policy programmes and budget performance.

Hon. Kariuki said that the Committee will be particularly interested on legislative gaps and suggested likely interventions to fix the same.

 "Law formulation is a time consuming exercise and the interactions between the State Departments and the Committee will create opportune interventions on legislative gaps," Hon. Kariuki said.

 Transport Principal Secretary Mr. Mohamed Daghar, expressed gratitude to the Committee's for it's support to the Department.

Mr. Daghar requested the Committee to consider enhancing budgetary allocation to the State Department to facilitate projects implementation and smooth running of operations within line State Departments

Officials from the following Semi- Autonomous Government Agencies (SAGAs) under the State Department for Transport were present; Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and National Transport and Safety Authority ( NTSA).

The NTSA Director-General Mr. George Njao told the Committee that the NTSA has potential to collect an average of Ksh2 Billion through the sale of number plates, Roads service application fees, Road Service license, Motor vehicle inspection fees, PSV badges, driver test booking, sale of e-sticker and Foreign Motor Vehicle Permit.

During their presentations, KAA Director-General Mr. Alex Gitari and his KCAA counterpart Mr. Emile Arao cited insecurity among the key challenges faced by their Departments.
