The Senate has been called upon to take the lead in ensuring the successful implementation of devolution and the realization of its full potential for all Kenyans.

Senate Majority Leader and Kericho County Senator, Aaron Cheruiyot emphasized this during the official opening of the Senate midterm retreat in Naivasha, Nakuru County. Addressing his fellow legislators, Sen. Cheruiyot urged them to take their constitutional mandate seriously in order to guarantee total and meaningful devolution as envisioned in the 2010 Constitution.

The Majority Leader took a moment to recognize and honour the sacrifices made by Kenyans who fought for the introduction of devolution, acknowledging their dedication, time and even lives in pursuit of economic transformation for the country.

“I pray for the level of commitment by the Senate to see that devolution succeeds in all the 47 counties,” he stated.

Sen. Cheruiyot specifically paid tribute to the late Dr. Chrispin Otieno Mbai, who chaired the Committee on Devolution and lost his life in the struggle to establish the system in Kenya.

“I honour Kenyans who sacrificed even with their dear lives to realize devolution. Dr. Chrispin Otieno Mbai paid with his dear life to have devolution introduced in Kenya,” he revealed.

He further called on his colleagues to remain steadfast in their duty to defend devolution and ensure that it achieves its intended purpose of bringing governance and resources closer to the people.
