Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Samuel Njoroge, has called on Kenya Parliamentary reporters to remain factual and objective while reporting Parliament activities.
Speaking at the official opening of an engagement workshop with the Members of Kenya Parliamentary Journalists Association (KPJA) in Naivasha, Nakuru County, he underscored the symbiotic relationship that exists between the National Assembly and the Parliamentary reporters, noting that their reportage shapes opinion in the public space.
Mr. Njoroge acknowledged the critical role of the fourth estate in informing and educating the public. He said," I am speaking to people to people who influence opinions by way of pen and voice. The role of the media cannot be understated."
He added that Parliament relies on the media to communicate accurately to the public.
βHelp us educate the public in simple factual ways which does not leave them confused. When you give citizens relevant factual information you enable them make rational decisions. As much as possible, try to confirm facts and prioritize societal values over sensational news,β Mr. Njoroge urged.
Pledging more support for the journalists, the Clerk called on them to embrace KPJA saying that it is a unique entity and the only vehicle for them to interact with Parliament.
The Clerk of the National Assembly further assured members of KPJA that the Parliamentary Service Commission is making plans to construct an ultra modern media center.
On his part, Mr. David Omwoyo, the Media Council Chief Executive Officer, pointed out that such engagements are crucial especially for Parliamentary journalists, given that they are tasked with breaking down the complex legislative process for their audience to get enlightened, thus reducing the risk of misreporting.
The four-day workshop, themed βCollaborating Towards Effective Coverage of the National Assemblyβ, will cover various sessions aimed at enhancing the quality of parliamentary reporting.
Featured topics include an overview of Parliamentary Broadcasting rules, the role of the National Assembly in the budget-making process, and strategies for leveraging digital media in political communication.
In a further announcement, Mr. Njoroge revealed plans for a Members' retreat, set to take place from January 27 to 31, in Naivasha, Nakuru County.
The retreat, marking the midpoint of the 13th Parliament, will provide an opportunity for lawmakers to reflect on the progress made and strategize for the upcoming legislative agenda in the fourth session.
