Konoin Constituency MP, Hon. Brighton Yegon has called for the expansion of Kamandura – Mai Mahiu - Suswa Road stating the roads are narrow and do not have alternative routes to divert traffic.

Seeking a Statement from the Departmental Committee on Transport and Infrastructure, Hon. Yegon said the road that serves the Southern Nyanza and parts of lower Rift Valley needs to be expanded especially along the Mai Mahiu escarpment.

In his request, he avers that the road which serves as a crucial corridor for transit of goods to Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania has been neglected.

β€œHon. Speaker, in spite of the strategic nature of the Kamandura – Mai Mahiu Road, motorists using the road, including the Mai Mahiu-Naivasha Road, frequently experience heavy traffic congestion, resulting in significant delays that frustrate commuters and businesses,” Hon. Yegon said.

He went on to add that over the years, appeals to the Government to expand this road and put in place safety measures have fallen on deaf ears.

β€œHon. Speaker, it is against this background that I seek a Statement from the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure on the measures being undertaken to address the perennial congestion along this particular road,” he said.

In addition, Hon. Yegon also asked the Committee to provide details on the budgetary allocation to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) towards expansion, rehabilitation, management and maintenance of spoilt sections of the Roads.

Hon. Yegon sought the Statement from the Committee in accordance with the provisions of Standing Order 44(2) (c) which allows Members to request for Statement from Committee chairpersons on matters relating to the relevant Committee’s mandate.
