The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has called on the Ministry of Interior and National Administration to establish a special program to address the increasing cases of domestic violence.

This follows the latest incident in which a Ugandan athlete, Ms. Rebecca Cheptegei, lost her life after allegedly being set ablaze by her Kenyan boyfriend.

While addressing the media at Parliament Buildings, the MPs condemned the killing and asked the Cabinet Secretary, Interior and National Administration, Prof. Kithure Kindiki to take speedy action.

"I call upon CS Kithure Kindiki to deal with this issue under the special program," said Nominated Senator, Hon. Gloria Orwoba

Ms. Cheptegei met her death after an altercation with her partner over the house she owned in Kenya.

The Members said the incident was a worrying pattern of violence against women athletes in Kenya and East Africa.

"These repeated tragedies make it painfully clear that we are failing to protect our women, and this must stop," added Sen. Orwoba.

The same sentiments were echoed by Machakos Senator, Hon. Agnes Muthama, who called on the Government to shield women at all cost against the rampant killings and torture.

"If you are fed up with women, leave us alone, let the women live because they have a future," remarked Sen. Kavindu.

The Parliamentarians further reaffirmed their commitment towards advocating for women's rights.

"As we continue to uphold the do not harm principle, we will not tire in our mandate to legislate and oversight for laws and policies that address the root causes of gender based violence," added Sen. Kavindu.
