The Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations backs a Report recommending to the House to approve the Ratification of the Protocol to the Constitutive Act of the African Union Relating to the Pan-African Parliament.
ย The Protocol of the African Union Relating to the Pan-African Parliament aims to provide a voice for African people and the diaspora, promote AU policies, human rights, democracy, good governance, and cooperation.
ย Additionally, it seeks to foster peace, prosperity, and solidarity in Africa while encouraging regional integration and the participation of the African Diaspora.
ย Once ratified by 28 African Union member states, it will enable the Pan-African Parliament to be an elective body, giving African citizens a stronger voice in shaping the continentโs future. Currently, members are appointed by national parliaments.
ย Kenya stands to benefit from ratifying this protocol as the country will have a platform to engage in decision-making, contribute to policy, and represent the interests of Kenyans at the continental level.
ย In a session chaired by the Vice-Chairperson, Hon. ย (Rtd. Maj.) Bashir Abdullahi, Members emphasized that ratifying the protocol will solidify Kenya's position as a regional leader.
ย ย "It will allow us to collaborate more effectively with other African nations on shared challenges, promote regional stability, and foster economic cooperation,โ Hon. (Rtd. Maj.) Abdullahi said.
ย The Committee in its Report noted that the Protocol aligns with the Constitution of Kenya and values, and will contribute to advancing democratic principles, human rights, and good governance across Africa.
