The Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Moses Wetang'ula has urged Chiefs, their assistants, and village elders to serve the government effectively at the grassroots level.

Speaking on Wednesday during a meeting with representatives from the National Chiefs Forum Welfare, led by their National Chairman, Senior Principal Chief Walter Obuchele when they visited his office, Speaker Wetang’ula emphasized on the crucial role Chiefs play in the country's security, particularly at the grassroots level.

The officials presented various requests, including seeking the Speaker's support for the upcoming review of legislation related to their mandate and the enhancement of their monthly operational facilitation.

β€œWe have identified you as our strategic partner in advancing our administrative and welfare agenda. We request your support for the upcoming countrywide sensitization exercise for Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs to be held in July 2024,” said Chief Obuchele.

The Chiefs, through their leaders, also requested a review of existing laws to officially recognize them as part of the established security organ.

He explained that this exercise aims to inform them about the welfare check-off system and ways to manage welfare matters.

He said that the chiefs meet various challenges in their daily work in solving local emerging issues that needs government's support.

Speaker Wetang’ula acknowledged their requests and commended the Chiefs for their steadfast service delivery.

He committed to supporting the upcoming sensitization exercise.

β€œYours truly salutes the critical security role played by Chiefs and elders in society, I assure you of my support on legislative matters affecting the effectiveness and delivery of your work,” said Speaker Wetang’ula.

Dr. Wetang’ula urged the leaders to continuously offer efficient and effective services at the grassroots level to maintain law and order and safeguard the social fabric and environment, which has been significantly impacted by human activities.

Speaker Wetang’ula invited the Chiefs to attend a House seating where they were admitted in the speaker’s gallery.

Hon. Moses Wetang’ula acknowledged the presence of a delegation of members of the Chiefs Welfare Association as he called them by name and where they serve.

Members commended the leader’s selfless services offered at the grassroot level and acknowledged that they are the first point of call in admiration matters in the country.

National Assembly Members committed to support the Chiefs to improve their working conditions through construction of modern offices using the NG-CDF.

The National Chiefs Forum Welfare (NCFW) indicated that its core mandate is to address welfare matters, network, share work-related challenges, and exchange ideas.
