The National Assembly is working to expedite the passage of the Assisted Reproductive Technology Bill, 2022, sponsored by Hon. Millie Odhiambo (Suba North).

TheΒ Β Bill seeks to regulate assisted reproductive technology (ART), establish a directorate to oversee its implementation,Β  and ensure the rights of children born through ART procedures. It also aims to prohibit unethical practices such as commercialization of ART and the sale of human gametes.

Β Hon. Odhiambo said theΒ Bill had been before the House earlier noting that this time it had the support of Members.

" This Bill has been before this House two times before and this is the third time. I can confirm to theΒ House that it has had overwhelming support even in the past," she said.Β Β

Further, Hon.Odhiambo told the House she was very willing to accommodate Members and I agree with the amendments proposed by the Committee.Β

"We can work by harmonizing the amendments through the Committee,"Β  she said.Β

The Chairperson of the Health Committee, Hon. (Dr.) Robert Pukose (Endebees) told theΒ House that the Committee had received proposed amendments from Hon. Peter Kaluma (Homa Bay Town), Hon. Irene Mayaka (Nominated) and Hon. Shakil Shabbir (Kisumu Town East).Β

In addition, Hon. (Dr.) Pukose also highlighted the extensive public participation the Bill had already undergone and the critical need for legal guidelines in a field.

Β "The Bill has undergone extensive public participation. Assisted reproductive health is actually being practised in this Country. What we need is a law guiding," Hon. (Dr.) Pukose said.Β

Temporary Speaker, Hon. Martha Wangari (Gilgil), directed that Members with proposed amendmentsΒ  collaborate with the Committee on Health to reach a consensus.
