This morning, the two Speakers of the Houses of Parliament, the Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Moses Wetangโula (National Assembly), the Rt. Hon. Amason Kingi (Senate) witnessed as His Excellency the President, Dr. William Ruto, CGH assented to the Affordable Housing Bill (National Assembly) Bill 75 of 2023.
The President, on Tuesday, signed the Bill into law at State House, Nairobi paving way for the collection of funds towards the construction of affordable houses in the country.ย
The Bill, passed by both Senate and National Assembly last week, seeks to establish a framework for the collection of the affordable housing levy and implementation of the affordable housing programmes one of the key pillars of the Kenya Kwanza administrations Bottom-Up Economic Transformational Agenda (BETA).
The enactment of the Bill will see Kenyans gain access to various categories of affordable housing. The categories comprise affordable social housing units, targeting persons whose monthly income is below Ksh. 20,000; affordable housing units targeting persons whose monthly income is between Ksh. 20,000 - 140,000; affordable middle class housing units accessible to persons earning over Ksh. 140,000 per month and a rural affordable housing units targeted at Kenyans living in areas not classified as urban areas.
According to the Bill, priority will be accorded to slum areas to ensure decent housing.
The two Leaders were accompanied by; the Clerks of the two Houses, Mr. Samuel Njoroge, CBS, (National Assembly), Mr. Jeremiah Nyegenye, CBS,ย (Senate), Majority Leaders Hon. Kimani Ichungโwah, EGH, MP (National Assembly), Hon. Aaron Cheruiyot, EGH, MP(Senate), also present at the ceremony were: Deputy President Hon. Rigathi Gachagua, EGH, Prime Cabinet Secretary, Hon. Musalia Mudavadi, EGH, Hon. Alice Wahome, EGH (CS Lands) and other senior members of the Cabinet, Hon. Johana Ngโeno, CBS, MP (Chairman Housing Committee), Hon. Kuria Kimani, MP(Chairman Finance Committee), Attorney General Hon. Justin Muturi, EGH, among others including members of the public currently engaged in the construction works.
