SENATE TRADE, INDUSTRIALIZATION AND TOURISM COMMITTEE MEETS EMBU COUNTY MUGUKA FARMERS COOPERATIVE EXECUTIVE

The Senate Standing Committee on Trade, Industrialization and Tourism led by the Vice Chairperson, Sen. Esther Okenyuri met with a delegation from Embu County Muguka/ Miraa Farmers Cooperative led by their Chairperson Mr. Jerevasius Nyombyekothe to discuss response from the Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry to the Statement as requested by Senator Embu County, Alexander Mundigi on high cess levied on Muguka on transit to Mombasa and its environs. 

In his Statement, the Senator had requested to know:-

1. The measures the Government has put in place, if any, to harmonize cess levies on Muguka on transit to Mombasa and its environs

2. Measures put in place, if any,to strengthen existing Muguka Cooperative Societies with the aim of facilitating members to access loans that will enable them engage in activities to improve their business

3. The progress of the Thuci, Kapingazi and Kamumu Dams that have been earmarked to be supplying water for Muguka farming as well as other domestic use.

The Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry advised the Committee to liaise with the muguka Consumer Counties in view to harmonizing the levies since Trade Development is a devolved function. 

The Committee is pursuing the Ministry of Cooperatives and Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME) Development; and that of Agriculture and Livestock Development to respond to the questions of;

 (a) Existing Muguka Cooperative Societies with the aim of facilitating members to access loans that will enable them engage in activities to improve their business; and (b) Give progress report on the Thuci, Kapingazi and Kamumu Dams that have been earmarked to be supplying water for Muguka farming as well as other domestic use respectively.

Present in the Committee were:-Sen. Andrew Omtatah, Sen. Karungo Thangwa, Sen. Jackson Mandago and Sen. Alexander Mundigi.
