SENATE STANDING COMMITTEE ON AGRICULTURE,LIVESTOCK AND FISHERIES CONSIDERS A STATEMENT SOUGHT BY SEN. HAMIDA KIBWANA ON THE STATE OF NUT INDUSTRY IN KENYA.

The Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries led by Embu Sen. Alexander Munyi Mundigi, MP, (Vice Chairperson) held a virtual meeting to consider a Statement sought by Sen. Hamida Kibwana, MP, on the State of the Nut Industry in Kenya.

The Senator had requested the committee in the statement to;

1. Provide an updated list of the areas under Nut farming in Kenya;

2. Outline measures if any, to enhance the production, processing, marketing, and export of nuts, stating the steps the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development is undertaking in ensuring that the process is environmentally sustainable;

3. State initiatives and programmes in place to attract foreign investment into the nut industry, detailing ways to improve the marketing and distribution of nuts domestically and internationally;

4. Expound on the legislative gaps required to align the industry with the changing needs and circumstances globally, to ensure the processing and value addition of nuts is carried out efficiently and sustainably.

The committee was taken through the response from the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development which was concluded to be satisfactory. 

Members present during the meeting were Trans Nzoia Sen. Allan Chesang, MP, Nominated Sen. Beth Syengo, Bungoma Sen. David Wakoli, Kitui Sen. Enoch Wambua, Makueni Sen. Daniel Maanzo and Nominated Sen. Hamida Kibwana.
