REVISE 2023/24 BUDGET ESTIMATE REPORTS TO FOCUS ON PRODUCTION NOT CONSUMPTION, BUDGET COMMITTEE TELLS DEPARTMENTAL COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSONS

The National Assembly Budget & Appropriations Committee (BAC) Chaired by Hon. Ndindi Nyoro has urged the Departmental Committee chairpersons tabling their reports to ensure that Departments within their Committees' purview invest in production rather than consumption as a long-term measure of reviving the country’s economy.

Members of BAC said priority will be given to overlapping agenda for instance resettlement of the landless & processing of title deeds, and employment of Junior Secondary School (JSS)   teachers amongst others.

“This Committee will ensure that funds are appropriated to the right priority areas,” said Hon. Nyoro.

In addition, Members of the Budget Committee challenged a proposal to reallocate funds for the purchase of prisoners' uniforms and purchase of food. The Committee said that the Department for Correctional Services should make use of the huge chunks of land that they have and invest more in production than in consumption to produce food to feed themselves and contribute to alleviating hunger in Kenya.

The Committee also urged Hon. Murugara led Committee to revise the Budget Estimates for 2023/24 so as to focus more on production and consider reallocating funds to buy sewing machines and purchase of materials from Rivatex instead of reallocating funds for the purchase of prisoners uniforms.
