The National Assembly has approved nominees for appointment to 100 Constituency Committees of the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF).
Speaking on the floor of the House on Wednesday, 5th March 2025 Deputy Majority Leader Hon. Owen Baya (Kilifi North) noted that, βas Members are aware, the NG-CDF plays a crucial role within constituencies in addressing socio-economic development in key areas, including education (bursaries), infrastructure, healthcare facilities, water projects, security and youth empowerment initiatives. The Fund primarily focuses on grassroots development initiatives, with its operations and management handled by Constituency Development Fund Committees established by Section 43 of the NG-CDF Act Cap. 414A.βΒ
Hon. Baya pointed out is expected to fill a governance gap left after the mandate of the previous 290 NG-CDF committees expired. He urged the remaining 119 constituencies to expedite the submission of their proposed committee members to the NG-CDF Board for vetting and parliamentary approval, noting that 190 constituencies had yet to submit names for consideration.Β
βThe House has been given the responsibility to scrutinize and approve the nominees to ensure continuity in NG-CDF operations. I urge Members who have not submitted names for their committees to do so without delay,β he added.Β
The Leader of the Majority Party, Hon. Kimani Ichungβwah (Kikuyu), who seconded the motion, emphasized that the approval would enable the committees to start functioning immediately, ensuring that ongoing and new projects receive the necessary funding and oversight.Β
βthese nominees enable all the 100 constituency NG-CDF Committees to start functioning after approval by the House, as is required by the law,β Hon. Ichungβwah added. Β
The approved nominees will serve in committees for constituencies including West Mugirango, Teso South, Tigania West, Thika Town, Turkana North, Turkana South, Ugunja, Matuga, Matungulu, Moiben, Mt. Elgon, Luanda, Lamu West, Kwanza, Kinangop, Kabondo Kasipul, Gatanga, and Embakasi East, among others.Β
Following the endorsement of the National Assembly, the nominees are set to be gazzetted, unlocking funds for projects and allowing smooth implementation of development initiatives at the constituency level. Β
Lawmakersβ also urged the NG-CDF Board to expedite the approval of projects to ensure funds allocated to constituencies.Β
