The National Assembly will conclude its Third Session on February 10th 2025 with legislators having made achievements, including the introduction of 49 Bills, consideration of 161 motions, and approval of the appointment of 85 persons to various state and public office.Β 

The session, which ran from February 2024 saw 17 of the 49 introduced Bills assented to, including The Division of Revenue (Amendment) Act, 2024, Water (Amendment) Act, 2023 and the Sugar Act, 2022. Β 

Despite hurdles, the Members of the National Assembly processed 19 Senate Bills, passed 11 National Assembly Bills forwarded to the Senate, and saw seven Bills undergoing mediationβ€”five from the Senate and two from the National Assembly. Meanwhile, 38 motions remained pending at the end of the session.Β 

During the third session, parliamentary oversight remained paramount, with legislators processing 312 statements and considering 54 Committee Reports. Β 

Notably, the House conducted an extensive public participation exercise across all 290 constituencies during consideration of the motion on the impeachment of the Deputy President. This was a significant milestone in engagement with the public, and will likely affect how similar activities are conducted by Committees and the House in future.Β  Β 

According to National Assembly records, first-time MPs have emerged as key contributors, introducing 31 of 131 legislative proposals (23%) in 2022, 80 of 197 proposals (40%) in 2023, and 22 of 74 proposals (30%) in 2024. Cumulatively, they accounted for 35% of the 402 proposals introduced so far. Additionally, they posed 314 of 687 parliamentary questions (46%) and made 193 of 433 requests for statements (44%).Β 

With the HouseΒ set to reconveneΒ on February 11th 2025, MPs are expected to consider business including reconstitution of the IEBC, reconstitution and approval of the Membership of 18 Committees: all Audit Committees, Budget and Appropriations Committee, Public Debt and Privatization Committee and the Budget Policy Statement and the Debt Management Strategy for 2025.Β
