In a move towards electoral reform, Senator Wakili Hillary Sigei, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs, and Human Rights, addressed key stakeholders at the National Conference on the Roadmap to the Finalization of Electoral Reforms, held in a Nairobi hotel. The two-day event, organized by the Election Law and Governance Institute for Africa (ELGIA), brought together prominent figures from various political and governmental institutions.

Β

Senator Sigei emphasized the importance of timely reforms, stating, "We are committed to delivering necessary electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 General Elections, and in good time as recommended in the Kriegler Report." He highlighted the challenges faced in previous electoral cycles, particularly the last-minute amendments to electoral laws.

Β

The Senator stressed the need for a comprehensive review, asking, "To what extent have our electoral laws and systems complied with constitutional requirements? What have the last two elections taught us?" He pointed out specific areas requiring attention, such as achieving gender representation and strengthening electoral institutions.

Β

Addressing the issue of public participation, Sigei revealed, "We are currently reviewing 142 submissions on various electoral amendment bills. We're going through every single submission to ensure we capture all stakeholders' views and comply with the threshold set by Superior Courts on meaningful public participation."

Β

The conference, attended by representatives from the British High Commission, USAID, and various political parties, underscores Kenya's commitment to refining its electoral process. Senator Sigei concluded by calling for collaboration: "Let us seize this opportunity to advocate for reforms that will empower our citizens, uphold their rights, and ensure that every vote counts."
