The Senate is set to convene for a special sitting tomorrow, Wednesday, August 14, 2024, following a formal notice from the Meru County Assembly regarding the impeachment of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza. This marks the third impeachment attempt to remove Governor Mwangaza from office within a span of two years, interrupting the Senate's three-week recess.
Β
Senate Speaker Sen. Amason Jeffah Kingi issued a Gazette notice announcing the special sitting, which will commence at 2.30 pm. in the Senate Chamber. The sole business of the sitting will be hearing the charges against Governor Mwangaza.
Β
The Meru County Assembly approved the impeachment motion on 8th August 2024, citing three main grounds: gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, gross misconduct and abuse of office. Specific allegations include illegal revocation of appointments, failure to implement County Assembly recommendations and misleading the public about funds raised after a blogger's murder.
Β
Meru County Assembly Speaker, Hon. Ayub Bundi Solomon, formally communicated the assemblyβs resolution to the Senate on 9th August 2024, as required by the County Governments Act. The impeachment process now moves to the Senate, where members will determine whether the charges against Governor Mwangaza are valid.
