The Speaker of the National Assembly, the Rt. Hon. Moses Wetangโula and his Senate counterpart, Hon. Amason Kingi joined Speakers from Commonwealth Member States during an event to mark the 75th Commonwealth Anniversary at the Commonwealth House, London.
The Commonwealth Day is an Annual Event observed across the Commonwealth countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, America, the Pacific and Europe.
This year sees the 75th Anniversary of the creation of the modern Commonwealth themed "๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐จ๐ง ๐ ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐".
In his keynote speech, the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Rt. Hon. Moses Wetangโula highlighted the historical importance of the Commonwealth.ย
โKenya affirms its commitment to the status that the Commonwealth has given to celebrating and respecting diversity and separate, but related individual national prioritiesโ, said Speaker Wetangโula.ย
Dr. Wetangโula underscored that the Constitution of Kenya continue to prioritize democratic and responsive governance in line with the Latimer House Principles while maintaining the unique aspects of beliefs, traditions, culture, and heritage.
Indicating that the values and principles of the Commonwealth have greatly influenced the Constitution of Kenya, he also emphasized on the need to enhance collaborative partnership particularly on the right of each Member State to uphold the values that bring them together and while respecting different cultural ideals.
โParliament of Kenya associates itself with the 75th Anniversary Communique. We remain fully committed to achieving the Commonwealth's core values through continued dialogue, collaboration, tolerance and the exchange of ideas while respecting the laws and customs of each Member Stateโ, Stated Speaker Wetangโula.
The Speaker committed to ensure that common but constructive ideals of the Commonwealth Association are adhered by the Parliament of Kenya as part of the continued traditions of the Member State.
The two Speakers later proceeded to lay wreathsย in honourย of the souls lost by Commonwealth countries in the World Wars at the Memorial gate.
The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 56 Independent and equal countries that is home to 2.4 billion people and includes both advanced and developing economies.
They are accompanied by Members of Parliament including; Commissioner Hon. Patrick Makau, Hon. John Kawanjiku, Hon. Nelson Koech, Hon. Julius Mawathe, Hon. Catherine Omanyo and the Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Samuel Njoroge.
