ย Soy MP, Hon. David Kiplagat requested for a Statement from the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Agriculture and Livestock regarding distribution of subsidized fertilizers to farmers in the North Rift region.
ย Hon. Kiplagat raised concern over the long queues and delays experienced by farmers in the fertilizer distribution programme.ย
ย " The Ministry of Agriculture should provide details on the amount of subsidized fertilizer available in National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots across the country," Hon. Kiplagat said.
ย He acknowledged that the Government-initiated a nationwide campaign to register farmers in order to deliver subsidized fertilizers by use of an e-voucher system which will ensureย traceability and full accountability of the subsidized fertilizers.
ย Hon. Kiplagat, however, noted that Kenyaโs Fertilizer Subsidy Programme (FSP) has been hit by several challenges with farmers citing a lag between the date of receipt of the notification and redemption of the subsidized fertilizer.ย
ย Several Members supported the need for the Statement saying that it isย planting season and farmers in the North Rift and across the country have been queuing for long at the NCPB depots for the subsidized fertilizers with little success.
ย In addition, Hon. Kiplagat called on the Ministry to consider giving farmers in the North Rift vouchers to purchase fertilizers from retailers at a subsidized price of 2,500Ksh per bag.ย
He further urged the Ministry to put measures in place to minimize the long queues at the NCPB depots.ย
