Members of the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) have committed to ensure the two-third gender principle is achieved in Parliament.
This commitment was made during the National Dialogue Forum on the two-thirds gender principle. The Forum brought together KEWOPA Members and the Multi-Sectoral Working Group (MSWG).
Speaking during the event, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Gladys Boss, assured Members of her unwavering support to ensure women secure their rightful slots in Parliament.
ย "Our trailblazers have been talking about this matter. We must find a way of resolving it even if it means dissolving Parliament," said Hon. Boss.
KEWOPA Vice Chairperson, Hon. Beatrice Elachi (Dagoretti North) asked for support from their male counterparts in Parliament, emphasizing that their support is critical for the passage and realization of the two-thirds gender principle.
The MSWG presented a comprehensive report proposing legal, policy, and administrative measures to promote the implementation of the gender principle. These included amendments to Article 90 to accommodate changes to Articles 97 and 98, as well as amendments to the Political Parties Act to establish a Women Inclusion and Political Participation Fund.
The Co-Chairperson of MSWG, Mrs. Daisy Amdany, asked for commitment to practical solutions to bring the matter to a logical conclusion.
"Let us commit to simple and predictable solutions already in operation," she said.
