Langata Member of Parliament, Hon. Phelix Odiwuor has moved a motion regarding the neglect of Langata public cemetery which was declared full, close to two decades ago.

The Motion calls upon the National Government through the Ministry of Health to urgently conduct an assessment of the public health risks posed by the continued use of the Lang’ata Cemetery, and to institute mitigatory measures in collaboration with other stakeholders.

According to Hon. Odiwuor, this situation has led to overcrowding and double- allocation of burial sites with bodies being buried in shallow graves leading to frequent uncovering by wild animals from the nearby national park.

He added thatΒ  the situation has caused untold anguish, pain and suffering to bereaved families, and psychological torment to the neighbouring community.

"I am deeply concerned that this situation has led to overcrowding and double-allocation of burial sites with bodies being buried in shallow graves leading to frequent uncovering by wild animals from the nearby national park," he said.Β

While seconding the Motion, Hon. Charles Onchoke, (Bonchari),Β Β said cemeteries in the country are not looked after well and there is a need to assess their suitability. He further said that as a country there is a need to have a decent cemetery to lay the dead, so that they can rest in peace.Β

Supporting the Motion, Hon. (Dr.) Lilian Gogo (Rangwe)Β  urged the National Government to have more than one burial site. She further said that there should be an alternative burial site outside the city and it should be well fenced.Β

" What is happening at Langata cemetery is unfortunate. We bury our loved ones in shallow graves and let them be mutilated by wild animals," she said..

Hon. Rindikiri Mugambi (MP, Buuri) said the cemetery has been over utilized and the population in Nairobi is increasing. He also said that the cemetery poses a security risk because it is not fenced and there is a forest nearby.
