Senate Committee on Trade, Industrialization and Tourism held a meeting today to consider the Handing Over Report by the Commissioner of Cooperatives to Drumvale Farmersβ Cooperative Society in Machakos County.
At its sitting held on Tuesday, 18th July 2023 the Committee directed the Commissioner of Cooperatives and the liquidator to hand over the societyβs records including land and membership registers to the current board of management and submit a report to the Committee within thirty days of the date of the meeting. The handing over was undertaken on Friday, 28th July 2023 at the Office of the Commissioner.Β
During today's meeting the Committee examined the handing over report and deliberated on the emerging issues. While the Committee successfully arbitrated the handover of Drumvale Farmersβ Cooperative Society Documents and Assets from the Liquidator to the Societyβs Management Committee, two questions by the Senator for Machakos Sen. Agnes Kavindu Muthama have not been exhaustively responded to and thus require a follow up. The two are: the status of convening members of the said Society as directed to the Director of Cooperatives, Nairobi City County by the Commissioner for Cooperative Development in his letter dated 9th September 2022; and the malpractices noted in the liquidation process proposing disciplinary actions on the culpable officer.
The Committee led by Sen. Lenku Ole Kanar Seki is keen to receive an update from the Ministry of Cooperatives and the Management of Drumvale Farmersβ Cooperative Society on the title deeds of the land designated for schools; the parcels of land that had not been subdivided; status of the riparian land that had been grabbed; the prevailing security situation in Drumvale following handover of Societyβs Management to current Board; and titling process of the land to ensure that the rightful owners of the parcels of land take ownership of their properties.
Members of the Committee present in the meeting were Sen. Esther Okenyuri the vice chairperson, Sen, Dr. Lelengwe Ltumbesi, Sen. Andrew Omtatah and Sen. Crystal Asige.
