The National Assembly Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Committee, chaired by Hon. James Gakuya (Embakasi North), has issued a directive to prevent the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) from destroying 49 containers carrying condemned sugar. This decision was reached during a meeting to investigate the illicit and irregular release of sugar unfit for human consumption earlier this year.
During the meeting, the Acting Commissioner of Customs and Border Control Mrs. Pamela Ahago who was representing the KRA, informed the Committee that there are 49 containers of condemned sugar still in storage, scheduled for destruction on Friday, 21st July 2023.
Members of the Committee raised concerns about the suitability of KRA to be involved in the disposal process, given that it had been implicated in the ongoing investigation of the 40 containers that entered the Kenyan market illegally earlier this year.
βThis Committee is devoted to thoroughly examining this issue to guarantee the safety and protection of Kenyan citizens," said Hon. Gakuya.
