The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations has been informed that extension and renovations works of the Officers Mess at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) are complete.
Members led by Chairperson Hon. Nelson Koech (Belgut), had visited the DHQ on a site inspection tour of works on the facility as part of their oversight mandate on the Ministry of Defence.
The Mess constructed at an estimated cost of Kshs.159.8 million, is a recreational facility for officers; as part of Ministry efforts to develop and strengthen the moral component of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) fighting power, which is fundamental to overall military success.
During the meeting the Members were taken through the Kenya Army's operational structure. They were also accorded an opportunity to inquire into defence related issues facing the nation including recent resurgence of terrorist attacks in parts of the country.
Hon. Koech said the Committee would support the KDF efforts to acquire modern equipment in addition to the purchase of more armored personnel carriers to minimize attacks on Kenyan troops.
"In fact this Ministry is among the few which in the next Financial Year'sΒ budget had its allocation enhanced. This is to enable theΒ Ministry to deal with these challenges and recruit more personnel," said Hon. Koech.
Members said it was necessary for the KDF to extend their Corporate Social Responsibility activities beyond their operational zones to fully benefit Kenyans across the Country.
The KDF team was led by Kenya Army Commander Lieutenant General Peter Njiru.
