The National Assemblyβs Public Petitions Committee chaired by Hon. Nimrod Mbai (Kitui East) undertook a fact-finding visit of NarokΒ East Constituency following a petition by the areaΒ Member of Parliament Hon. Lemanken Aramat. The petition filed in the House on behalf of the residents is with regard to access roads in the area.Β
The petitioners implore the National Government to undertake the construction of a publicly accessible road specifically catered to the residents of Narok East. This request arises from the unique geographical circumstance in which the constituency finds itself, encompassed by the expansive Hell's Gate National Park, the renowned Olserian Farm, and the prominent Kengen Geothermal Station.
The residents find themselves subjected to stringent limitations. They are allowed to pass through the grounds of Hell's Gate National Park two designated days each week. This, according to the petitioners, curtails their freedom of movement and access to markets and pasture for their livestock.Β
Making his remarks during the meeting attended by several stakeholders, Hon. Mbai emphasized the need to come together to get solutions for the problemsΒ raised.Β
βWe need to change the old ways and come up with new resolutions. The community is suffering and I need to leave here knowing we have both a medium term and a long term plan to not only help the residents but also open up this area for expansion and development,β said Hon. Mbai
The residents requestedΒ that the National Park be turned into a National Reserve. This they said is necessary because of persistent wildlife encroachment and predation on their livestock.Β
