The National Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Moses Wetang'ula has commended Members for the decorum and dedication witnessed in the House during debate and passage of the Finance Bill (2023) with amendments.
Speaking minutes to midnight, after conclusion of Business related to the Bill, Speaker Wetangula said the camaraderie witnessed during the Committee of the whole House was clear evidence of the maturity of our Country's democracy, and dedication of Members to the their core mandate of legislation.Β
He added that the conduct of Members was yet again prove that the august House had come of age, as serious trail blazer to peers within the continent and in other jurisdictions.
"For the new Members, you now appreciate that the wallet of the State lies in this House. That is why we have taken this long. I am sure that many Kenyans out there who do not participate in this process now know what this Finance Bill is all about," said Hon. Wetang'ula.
This was the second day in a row that the National Assembly sat late into the night, after adopting a Procedural Motion on Tuesday to sit until the end of the day if the Business relating to the Finance Bill had not been concluded by the end of the scheduled House sitting time.Β
On Wednesday, the House yet again approved a Motion that allowed Members to sit until the end of the day to dispense with Amendment proposals to the Finance Bill (2023).
Hon. Wetang'ula said the dedication of the House as well as Members of the Speaker's panel during the process had demonstrated immense sense of statesmanship.Β
