Lamu County Senator Joseph Kamau, is seeking a Statement from the Standing Committee on Land , Environment and Natural Resources regarding the compulsory acquisition of land by the Government in Lamu.

Senator Joseph in his Statement wants the Committee to clarify whether the Government is planning to compulsorily acquire more than 400 acres of land in Masha, Jipendeni, Bopwe, Rumshi and Sinambio areas in Lamu County, and if so, indicate the timeframe for the said acquisition and whether the said acquisition will be in line with Articles 40(3) of the Constitution of Kenya and all other statutes relating to compulsory acquisition of land; Committee to outline the measures the National Land Commission (NLC) has taken to ensure transparency in assessing the value of the land to be acquired.

Lamu Senator in this Statement requested the Committee to state whether the NLC has conducted open and transparent public inquiries into the ownership of the land and indicate the form of contemplated in the said acquisition and the measures put in place to ensure fair and prompt compensation.
