SPEAKER WETANG’ULA LAUDS KEWOPA’S PUSH FOR THE REALIZATION OF GENDER EQUALITY

National Assembly is keen on working with the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) to uplift female Parliamentarians and budding women in leadership, the National Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula has said.

In a meeting with the recently elected KEWOPA Executive, Speaker Wetang’ula commended the caucus's efforts in pushing for gender equality in Parliament. He lauded KEWOPA for playing a significant role in pushing for the enactment of laws and policies that promote gender equality and women empowerment in Kenya.

Hon. Speaker emphasized the importance of unity, inclusivity, and political collaboration in the women's agenda. “I support and believe in women and women in leadership. I want to assure you that we can work together. You will receive my support in your agenda. My first call to you is, be united, work as one, and speak in one voice,” said Speaker Wetang’ula.

During the meeting, the KEWOPA Executive Members asked the Speaker who doubles as the chairperson of the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) to assist in its transformation from a caucus to a gender directorate within the PSC structure. This, they said, will help them advance women's economic empowerment and obtain administrative support from the Commission.

In response, the Speaker noted that the transformation from a Caucus to a directorate would give KEWOPA more influence and resources to advance its agenda.

In addition, he stressed the need for KEWOPA to include men in their activities to ensure the inclusivity of the “boychild” so that the boys are not be left behind.

Further,  Hon. Wetang'ula urged KEWOPA to provide mentorship to young women aspiring to be leaders and to establish and foster relations in the political sphere.

In conclusion, the Speaker advised KEWOPA Members to establish ties with foreign women delegations to increase their impact and amplify their voices.
