BLUE ECONOMY COMMITTEE VETS HON.OGINDO FOR CHAIRPERSON KENYA FISH MARKETS AUTHORITY.

The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Blue Economy, Water and Irrigation  vetted former Rangwe Member of Parliament Hon. Martin Otieno Ogindo for the position of Chairperson the Kenya Fish Marketing Authority (KFMA).

The Committee Chaired by Hon. Kangogo Bowen, sought to assess Hon. Ogindo's knowledge of the blue economy sector and his understanding of the challenges and opportunities available to Kenyans.

Hon. Members raised several important questions, including why locally sourced  fish is more expensive compared to fish imported from China. Members also wanted to know what Hon. Ogindo intends to do inorder to  increase the uptake of locally sourced fish.

Further, the Committee inquired about Hon. Ogindo's plans to encourage the consumption of fish as a key part of the Kenyan population's diet, which would help to grow the Blue Economy sector.

Hon. Bowen wanted to know what specific measures Hon. Ogindo would put in place to ensure there is adequate fish stock in Kenyan waters.

In his response, Hon. Ogindo stated that if approved by the Committee and the House, he would engage all key stakeholders, undertake proper scientific studies on the market gaps and local fishing challenges, and craft workable solutions.

The KFMA  plays a crucial role in supporting the development of the country's blue economy sector by promoting the consumption of locally sourced fish and ensuring that there is a sustainable supply of fish to meet the demand.

Members present during the vetting hearings included Hon. Kassim Tandaza (Matuga), Hon. George Gachagua (Ndaragwa), Hon. Eric Mwangi (Mathira), Hon. Dorothy Ikiara (Nominated), and Hon. Stanley Muthama (Lamu West).
