The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has raised alarm over the disappearance of 125 BVR kits belonging to IEBC before the 2022 General Elections.

The Committee chaired by Hon John Mbadi was told that IEBC lost the gadgets that were being used to register voters a few months to the Elections. The Auditor General in a Report tabled before the Committee revealed that IEBC also lost 952 laptops that contained election data. According to the Report, these gadgets were stolen from the Commission's Kisumu county warehouse.

Hon Mbadi noted that he read sinister motives in the loss of the very important gadgets belonging to the Electoral body. He said such a loss will make contestants in the last polls question the credibility of the electoral process carried out by the IEBC.

“IEBC has been having issues with politicians with the way they conducted the Elections. Such revelations point to a rigging scheme and must be investigated", Hon Mbadi said.

Contributing to deliberations on the matter, Lugari MP Hon Nabii Nabwera noted that Elections in Kenya were very emotive and IEBC should guard against such incidents to ensure that voters trust the electoral process. Hon. Nabwera observed that, "IEBC must be having cartels that were being used to steal such critical elections items to give advantage to their masters who were competing in the polls. This matter must be investigated and culprits brought to book".

Another Member of the Committee, Funyula MP Hon Wilberforce Oundo questioned how IEBC could lose elections equipment from warehouses that were guarded by armed police officers.

Mr Marjan in his response said the BVR kits that were stolen did not have any sensitive elections data adding that the matter was being investigated by police.He added that an officer who was in charge of the IEBC Kisumu warehouse when the laptops were stolen has been dismissed and the matter was with the police as well.
