The Senate Business Committee (SBC),the apex body of the Senate, is currently holding a 2-day induction retreat tailored to equip members to understand their roles in order to effectively discharge their legislative mandate.

The critical Committee is tasked to among other functions to establish Committees,draft Standing orders,prioritize or postpone any business of the House and any other business that may arise.

The Deputy Speaker,Senator Kathuri Murungi (Meru) while opening the retreat,underscored the importance of the meeting saying it will equip members acquaint themselves with the intricate details of their broad mandate.

"As you are aware, a loaded in-tray awaits us as Parliament given the high expectations Kenyans have in the wake of the August elections that proved to be a watershed moment for our Country,"he said.

He pointed out that the country is experiencing a myriad of challenges such as adverse effects of climate change, unemployment,national debts and harsh economic times.

"As the Legislature,it is our duty to step up to the plate and join in efforts to not only find lasting and sustainable solutions to these challenges but also give hope to our people,"Deputy Speaker stated.

Senate Majority Leader,Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot acknowledged the importance the Committee plays and the task ahead.

"The Senate rises or falls based on the work of SBC.We should align our agenda to the needs of our people,"he said.

Minority Leader and Kilifi Senator Justice(Rtd) Stewart Madzayo expressed optimism that the Members are equal to task.

The Committee is chaired by the Speaker of the Senate Rt.Hon. Amason Kingi.

Other members of the Committee are Sen.Aaron Cheruyot (Kericho),Sen Justice (Rtd) Stewart Madzayo(Kilifi),Sen.(Dr) Boni Khalwale,Sen. Fatuma Dullo,Sen Ledama Olekina,Sen Prof Margaret Kamar(Nominated),Sen Mwinyihaji Mohamed(Mombasa),Sen Roba Ali Ibrahim (Mandera),Sen Hillary Sigei (Bomet),Nominated Senators Mutinda Tabitha and Veronica Nduati.
