The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations has inspected ongoing works at  Forces Referral and Research Hospital (FRRH) at Kabete, Nairobi.

Led by the  Committee Vice-Chairperson Hon. Major (Rtd) Bashir Abdullah (Mandera-North), Members visited the facility to assess the progress of the ongoing works, the challenges faced, the opportunities available, and the value of the money expended on the project.

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) team undertaking the project responded to key concerns by Members including questions on the status of impending funding for the project, and its projected completion timelines.

The Facility once complete will be a state-of-the-art 700-bed medical facility that will serve officers serving in the KDF, National Police Service (NPS), Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), National Intelligence Service (NIS), Kenya Coast Guard Services (KCGS), National Youth Service (NYS), and their families. 

The estimated cost of the facility is Kshs.19.3 billion and is set to have several specialized units, such as a cancer center, a medical school complex, an oxygen plant, an accident and emergency block, and a mortuary.

Hon. Bashir underscored the projected benefits of the facility and pledged to rally the National Assembly to allocate necessary resources for its completion.

"Clearly this facility will be of benefit to our disciplined forces and members of the public and it's important that it is completed," said Hon. Bashir.

Members sought to know the extent to which members of the public could access the facility.

In response to this, the KDF team clarified that cases of admission for members of the public will be on a referral basis.

The Vice Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces Lieutenant  General Jonah Mwangi pledged to work closely with the Committee to ensure the project is completed.
