THE 80TH COMMONWEALTH PARLIAMENTARY ASSOCIATION (CPA) AFRICA REGION EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING CONCLUDES IN NAIROBI –SUNDAY JULY 18th, 2021
The Speaker of the National Assembly the Rt. Hon. Justin B.N. Muturi, EGH, MP, officially opened the 80th CPA Africa Region Executive Committee Meeting at the Nairobi Serena Hotel. Speaker Muturi who is the Chair of the EXCO was flanked by his counterpart Speakers from the National Assembly of Tanzania, the Rt. Hon. Job Ndugai, and the House of Representatives of Nigeria, the Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.
In his speech, Speaker Muturi emphasized the importance of reviewing the legal status of the CPA which is currently registered as a charity organization in the United Kingdom.
“We are currently working on proper registration of the Association to enable it acquire same status as that of an international association,” said Hon. Muturi.
He also pointed out that the CPA Africa Region lacks representation in the current Coordinating Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, an issue that needs urgent attention.
He further indicated that Speakers and Members of Parliament who make up the Association in the region perform critical roles in legislatures highlighting matters of importance to their nations. This is therefore imperative that the legal status of the CPA be concluded in the shortest time possible.
Speaker Muturi thereafter chaired the 80th Meeting of the Executive Committee in his capacity as the Chairperson. The meeting deliberated on reports adopted by the Sub-Committees of the EXCO, which include the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) Steering Committee, the Regional Representatives (RR) Sub-Committee, the Programme Planning and Finance Sub-Committee, the Sub-Budget Committee and the Investment Board.
The meeting came to a conclusion today after a week-long series of activities. Among key agendas considered by the EXCO included the management of financial and administrative affairs of the Association, regional representation, programme planning and legal status of the international Association.
