The National Assembly's Departmental Committee on Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives chaired by Hon. James Gakuya (Embakasi North) met officials from the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) led by the Acting Managing Director and Council Secretary Mrs. Esther Ngari to discuss the disappearance of condemned sugar earlier this year. 

Mrs. Ngari distanced the standardization body from involvement in the disappearance of the sugar. She informed the Committee that the said sugar was in the custody of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) with the Authority's seals and that KEBS were awaiting the official release of the sugar to them.

The Committee asked Mrs. Ngari to furnish it with more information in regards to; the appointment of the multi-agency team, the period  KEBS needs to conclude the search for the disappeared sugar, and whether KEBS tested the sugar while at their Mombasa warehouse.

In addition, the Committee wanted to know whether there are other condemned consignments held by KRA  and the mechanisms that KEBS put in place to avert the recurrence of such malpractices in the future.

In her response, Mrs. Ngari informed the Committee that the standardization body intends to form a permanent Committee for the destruction of suspected goods and review the Standards Act to give clear powers to KEBS to destroy rejected consignments.
