The leadership of the National Assembly has called for a bipartisan approach to the legislative work as well as fulfillment of its constitutional mandate.

Speaking during the mid-term retreat for Members of the National Assembly in Naivasha, Nakuru County, Majority Leader Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah (Kikuyu) and Minority Leader Hon. Junet Mohamed (Suna East) emphasized the importance of unity among lawmakers in addressing national challenges.

First-term Members of Parliament (MPs) in Kenya's National Assembly have been commended for their outstanding performance in fulfilling their constitutional duties. 

According to the Clerk of the National Assembly, Samuel Njoroge, the new MPs have significantly outperformed their predecessors in legislative contributions.

The National Assembly House leadership has emphasized that performance, consistent attendance of Committee meetings, and active participation will be key factors in the reconstitution of House Committees.

National Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Moses Wetang’ula said committees are the engine of parliamentary work and stressed that Members who demonstrate dedication, competence, and accountability in their roles will be prioritized in the new structure. 

The Speaker of the National Assembly Rt. Hon. (Dr) Moses Wetang’ula has urged Members to engage constructively and explore alternative solutions, to ensure that the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) does not stall.

This is in light of the the High Court declaring the NG-CDF Act unconstitutional last year, whereby the High Court held that the Fund and all its projects and programmes shall cease to operate next year.

More than 200 Legislative proposals are  pending before the National Assembly Departmental Committees, Clerk Mr Samuel Njoroge has said.

Speaking at the start of the 2025 Mid-Term retreat by the National Assembly in Naivasha, Nakuru County, Mr Njoroge said the big number of the pending legislative proposals pose a worrying trend.

"I want to take this opportunity to urge chairpersons of the Committees to expedite the process of dealing with the legislative proposals drafted by Members and pending on their in trays," said Mr Njoroge.

The Chief Justice Hon. Martha Koome presided over the swearing-in ceremony of Members to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) selection panel, on Monday 27 January, 2025.

This comes after a decision made by the High Court on Friday 24 January, 2025, which lifted the earlier stay orders barring their appointment.
