Glossary of Terms

  1. Act: (of Parliament) is a law made by parliament; a bill that has passed all three Readings in each House and has received the Presidential assent.
  2. Appropriation bill: A bill which if passed by parliament, will allow the government to spend money it has gathered from the community through taxes and charges, on Government, services, roads, dams, schools, etc.
  3. Assent: to agree or to approve. E.g.

The Speaker's Office

The Speaker is an ex-officio Member of Parliament elected by other Members of Parliament pursuant to Article 106 of the Constitution, which provides that there shall be a Speaker for each House of Parliament, who shall be elected by that House in accordance with the Standing Orders, from among persons who are qualified to be elected as members of Parliament but are not such members.
